When I started my Scar Stories Project earlier this year, I wasn't exactly sure where it was going to take me. I knew that I wanted to help people who had experienced trauma find the beauty in their broken-ness. To be able to recognize that (for many) without the marks on their bodies, they might not even be here. To be able to share their stories of pain, fear, trials and their path to acceptance of their scars.
As the project has grown, I have had the privilege to work a heart attack survivor, a heart transplant survivor, a traumatized Mama who had everything go wrong with her pregnancy and birth but survived to love on her new baby girl, a former Special Operations military operative who couldn't even talk about half of his scars due to the stories being classified. Still on the shoot calendar, I have talked with suicide survivors, liver and kidney transplant survivors, brain cancer survivors and more...
I have partnered with Jenna Bell, heart transplant survivor, former teacher and fellow military spouse to write the stories and our plan is now for a book that should be released sometime in 2019.
The one thing that every participant has had in common is their strength, inner beauty and the ability to find the joy in their lives, however messy they are. I'm so grateful to be able to share in their stories. This little snippet is from beautiful Andrea's reveal a few weeks ago...Enjoy!
PS I'm still accepting participants, if you have survived a traumatic event and wouldn't mind bearing your scars and your story for me...please let me know! (Participate in Scar Stories)
I am exclusively an environmental family portrait artist. Currently based in Oahu, Hawaii and catering to families who truly value fine art photography for their family memories. Popular among locals, but also caters to tourists who have "vacation schedules".
